President Weah Dedicates PHP Recreation Park in Monrovia-PHP Unification Park, also known as Liberia Unification Park, is a recreational complex in Monrovia.

Monrovia, Liberia — President George Manneh Weah on Saturday, December 23, 2023, formally dedicated the PHP Recreation Park, a modern leisure facility now considered one of Monrovia’s most talked-about public spaces.

Located along the historic Palm Grove Cemetery stretch, the park is designed to provide Liberians — particularly young people — with a safe and vibrant place for sports, leisure, and community engagement.

The facility boasts a gym, two football fields, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, a female-only kickball field, a children’s playground, a restaurant, and an administrative building. Together, these amenities mark a major step in the government’s efforts to promote recreation and wellness in the capital.

“This park is not just for play; it is for peace, unity, and development,” President Weah remarked during the dedication ceremony, urging citizens to take pride in the facility and use it responsibly.

Beyond its recreational offerings, the park carries deep historical significance. At its heart stands a memorial monument marking the site where 13 senior officials of the late President William R. Tolbert’s administration were executed in April 1980, following the military coup led by Samuel K. Doe. The monument serves as both a reminder of Liberia’s painful past and a symbol of the nation’s resilience.

Community members and youth groups who attended the ceremony welcomed the development, describing it as a much-needed space for sports and family gatherings in Monrovia. Many highlighted that the female-only kickball field demonstrates inclusivity and support for women’s participation in sports.

With its combination of modern sports facilities and a historical monument, the PHP Recreation Park is expected to become a landmark in Monrovia — offering not just recreation, but also reflection and remembrance.

The Park also boasts a memorial monument at the site where the 13 senior government officials of the Tolbert administration were executed for public Corruption, in the immediate aftermath of the April 1980 military coup.
